Intramurals - Dodge Ball

Dodge Ball

Maximum number of players per team:

  • 10 (7 on the court at a time)

Objective:

  • Eliminate all opposing players by getting them “out.” To get an opponent out, one must either:
    1. Hit an opponent with a thrown ball, before it hits the ground and BELOW THE OPPONENT'S SHOULDERS! (If you hit an opponent in the head, YOU are out.)
    2. Catch an opponent's thrown ball BEFORE it makes contact with the ground.
    3. Note: Balls caught off the wall do not count as an out.

Game Length:

  1. Each week you will play a set of 10 games against another team.
  2. Each game will run a maximum of 4 minutes in length.

Ways to win:

  1. Eliminate your entire opposing team before time is up.
  2. Have more active (players on court) players when time is up, than your opponent.
  3. In the event of a tie after the 3 min. sudden death tie-breaker attempt, each team will pick one player in for a 1-on-1 free-for-all battle. Each player will be given one ball and allowed to run anywhere they would like inside the court boundaries. The first person to eliminate the other wins.

The Rules of the Game:

  1. Games will be played on standard sized volleyball court.
  2. Each team will be split by the centerline and must stay within that centerline, sidelines and their end line.
  3. Games will begin with the dodge balls being placed at the centerline, and participants lined up behind their respective end line.
  4. Upon the Court Monitors whistle, players may run up to centerline to get the balls, BUT NO BALL may be thrown until it has been brought back behind the free throw line.
  5. The only time players may leave the confines of their boundary is to retrieve a stray ball that has rolled onto the other court.
  6. Players retrieving balls may not be thrown at until they have gotten back in their boundary.
  7. Players holding a ball may bat other balls away with that ball. However, if they drop that ball they are out.
  8. Player's may not stall and must throw available balls within a reasonable time period (approx. 10 seconds).
  9. If a ball bounces off a player, and is caught by their teammate, the person who the ball bounced off of is out, and also the person who threw it is out.

Rules Enforcement:

  1. Each game will be played under the “Honor's system”, this means they will be self-officiated.
  2. Any dispute that cannot be resolved will be ruled over by the court monitor.
  3. The court monitor's ruling is final.

“Special Bonus”

  • If one player is remaining and they catch an opponent's ball, ONE and only ONE teammate may re-enter the game.
